WebRTC Interoperability Activity Group

Description of the Activity Group

The WebRTC standard is gaining significant traction within the W3C and IETF standards bodies as well as within the industry. The W3C is standardizing the browser APIs while the IETF is focused on standardizing the underlying network protocols such as the communication model, the security model, and media functions. As the IETF continues its work on and standardize parts of the WebRTC model, it is important for IMTC member companies to understand the impact of WebRTC on their technologies and business.

The IMTC WebRTC Interoperability Activity Group provides a forum for IMTC member companies to cooperate and pool resources on WebRTC interoperability issues of common interest.  The Activity Group focuses on interoperability issues relating to various types of WebRTC devices as described in draft-ietf-rtcweb-overview including WebRTC Browsers, WebRTC non-browsers, WebRTC compatible endpoints, and WebRTC Gateways. The group is focused on enterprise use of WebRTC (including intra-enterprise, B2B, and B2C communications) and the interworking of WebRTC with other technologies (including SIP and H.323). As described inThe focus of the group is to complement, rather than duplicate, the work ongoing in related standards organizations. As with other IMTC AGs, if issues are identified that are relevant to SDOs, we will engage the appropriate SDO.

Objectives
The group has a number of specific objectives including:
    • Provide a forum for members to share WebRTC knowledge including interoperability issues, developments in WebRTC standards, and WebRTC market evolution.
    • Provide a forum for members to agree on use cases for WebRTC-based communications for which the IMTC can add value by providing interoperability tools, frameworks, events, etc.
    • Provide a forum for members to define, agree upon, and provide requirements for enhancements to the corresponding standards organizations (e.g. W3C and IETF),.
    • Develop an interoperability test framework and conduct interoperability test events
  • Provide a forum for members to agree on feature and protocol profiles for WebRTC

Work items
The group has a number of current work items that will be taken up.  These include:
    • Formulate use cases of interest to the group.
    • Develop an interoperability test plan based on the use cases of interest and prepare for interoperability test events, including the IMTC SuperOp!.
    • Clarify and define the interaction of this group with the SIP Forum.  To eliminate duplicate work, this group will, in conjunction with the SIP Forum, define areas that each group will pursue independently as well as on collaborative basis.  This may also include the sharing and codevelopment of use cases.

Liaisons
The IMTC collaborates and expects to have liaison relationships with several standards development organizations including IETF, W3C, 3GPP, SIP Forum. In addition, this group is interested in the work of ITU-T and ISO should they standardize other components relevant to WebRTC.

Collaboration Methods
      • Private e-mail reflector to exchange information and discuss issues.
      • Conference calls (monthly or as needed) to synchronize with respect to new developments on WebRTC standardization, review existing or in-progress specifications, and identify any missing requirements.
      • Face-to-face meetings as required.
      • Participation is generally limited to IMTC members.
